THE SILK ROAD

The Silk Road

Tonight I would like to share a little bit of history with all of you. The silk Road.

The silk road wasn't meant to be a business connection,it was for war!

War between the Han Chinese and the HUN tribe.

The HUN tribe from the research I have done we could guess was the ancestor of the Mongolian people.

Even the history professor can't be sure about this, though.

It was a German geographer Ferdinand Von Richthofen called it The Silk Road in 1877. Before that, it had a few names, like silk road, china road, spices road.... etc...

More than 2000 years ago in the year BC 158, A Chinese man called Zhang Qian was on his way as an ambassador to ask the DA YUE SHI people to help his country fight the HUN people.

He went from Xian the capital city of the Han dynasty to the West. He didn't know exactly where to find them. All he knows is to keep going west.

But he was captured by the HUN people and held for 12 years, then he managed to escape. He did not forget his duty, so he continued on his way to the DA YUE SHI country.

When he found them he found that after this 12years the DA YUE SHI ( The Afghanistan) people didn't want to fight any wars any more.

So he went back and reported to his Emporer. He told him that the Da Yue Shi peoples wanted to exchange things to improve their lives instead of making war.

The silk road began from then.

Actually the silk road has three main parts. It is not a single road. It can be thought of as in three sections. East, Middle and West.

The East part is from Xian to Dun Huang. I think many of you know about Xian, it is where thousands of soldier figurines were found in an Emporer's grave.

This part is the flat, easy part of the road.

The middle part is three different roads itself. A Northern one, a Central one and a Southern one.

Why? Because from Dunhuang go further west is very difficult. There is the Taklamakan desert in front of you stretching to the West for 1000km and bordered by the Tianshan mountains on the North and the Kunlun mountains on the South.

So there came to be a Northern road north of the Northern Tianshan mountains.

A central road South of the Tianshan mountains and along the northern fringe of the desert.

And a southern road south of the desert and north of the Kunlun mountains.

Those Northern Tianshan Mountains average about 5000 metres above sea level. Up on the mountains it is snowing all the year. And those mountains stretch for 2500km East/West and are 250km wide, North/South.

You can imagine how hard the condition there are. Back in those days the business men have to get round these mountains somehow - no cars, no planes, no rail, so some went north of the mountains travelling East-West though Russian Territory. This is the north line of the silk road in the middle section of the silk road.

The 15th largest desert of the world the Taklamakan desert is 1000kms, long and about 370km wide. It covers an area of 337,600 square kilometres. It is about the same size as New Zealand. They couldn't get through the desert.

So some made a road between the Taklamakan desert and the Tianshan mountains, south of the mountains all the way to Iran.

This is the central road in the middle section of the 'Silk Road'.

Kunlun mountain are also about 5000metres above sea level, the same as the Tianshan mountains. In fact the highest mountain in the Kunlun range is only 300metres lower than the highest Tianshan peak.

But the weather in the Kunlun is even harder than in the Tianshan mountains. So could not be travelled through, either.

Some the traders made a road along the southern border of the desert along the northern fringe of the Kunlun mountains, all the way to Iran, this is the south road of the central section of the silk road.

And the last, the third section is the western section.

There are here two roads, two different ways to go.

The northern road goes from Russia go through to the middle east, Caspian area. The Black sea at Turkey. Then from Turkey to Europe.

The southern road goes from Iran through Baghdad, Damascus, the Red sea area, to Cairo, Egypt and from there spreads to Africa and Italy.

And also many of them went down south east Asia as well.

This road not only exchanged silk but also pottery, tea, gold, silver, and agricultural products.

And along this more than 7000 kms of road the culture, the civilization, the technology, have all been impacted.

The first paper factory built in Italy in the year 1466. used technology from Han Chinese.

And coming back along the Silk Road Grapes, Carrots, Black pepper, Spinach, Cucumber, and all sorts kinds of nuts are some of the things that have been transplanted to China from the western end of the Silk Road.

Lapis lazuli, once a highly valued blue gemstone was originally from Afghanistan and was transported to the rest of the world via the Silk Road. When transported to India, it became a Religious keepsake. In old Greece, Egypt and Rome, Lapislazuli became the status symbol for the Nobility.

Islam, Muslim, Zoro-astri-an-ism came to China via this road.

The silk road kept Friendship between the world for 2000 years. Although the industrialization of the world has replaced many of its trading functions the middle parts of it still functions as of old and trade goes on as it has done for 2000 years... or would, will do, if there can be no wars in this area.

friendship

Today is friendship day
I wondered why this particular day

It doesn't matter
We want to world get better

Here I am juggling with words
out there full with blue birds

Can't lay back relay on magic
Fate could play a trick

Everybody say that
“Man proposal,
God dis proposal.”

Leave that to the god,
We do what we could.

Spiritual is the only matter
we want to world get better.

Cultural soaking in food 2

Do you ever taste Chinese Moon cake?

No? Here , try this?

Why called moon cake? Because it is specially made for this particular night.
In China we have Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter four seasons to fill one year. Autumn is harvest season and the weather always nice, soft cold breeze, rainless, sky is higher then ever. For some reason the moon in the middle August is the best of all the year. When you belly is full, then spiritual will start work, plus is harvest season. So back then CHUN QIU time, 3000 years ago, our ancestor put the table in the yard full fruit on it. The family get reunite together watching the moon. After a full of year struggle life, now give self and the family a tiny break under this beautiful moon lights. The wife of the family use what she got making some cookies. That is come out the moon cake.

Of course in the folklore always have some interesting rumor spread.

Rumor one:

Once up on a time, there are 10 suns up in the sky, they burned all the crops, people couldn't get any water to drink. May of them had died from the heat of the suns. There a man called Hou Yi ( here the hero come as you knew it when I start the story), he is the best bow and arrow man. He climbed on top of the Kun Lun Mountain (Kunkun mountain at south west of Qing hai province, now you can see it is impossible. Because by then, the people who lived in Qing hai province all is Muslim, and the rumor is spread by Han Chinese, and that mountain sea level is 5500---6000m), shoot off 9 suns, ordered the last one work 12 hours, sleep 12 hours in the sea. He is hero now, the most beautiful woman married him, they lived happily together.

Hang on, the story not finish yet. Did you find there any thing relevant about the moon? No! So the story have to keep going, isn't it?

A god heard his story, come down to the world give him a pill, if he eat this pill, he could live for ever. But only enough for one person. Hou Yi couldn't leave his beautiful wife behind so he hind the pill away.
One man heard he got the magic pill, he choose a day, that Hou yi not at home. He use sword to push Hou yi's wife give him the pill. Hou yi's wife don't want to a such inferior man get the pill. So she swallowed the pill. She fly up to the sky. Because she miss her husband, so she choose the nearest place to stay, the moon. Hou yi miss his wife, so he sit in his yard beside the table full of cookies that his wife made for their dinner watching the moon, he can see his wife up in the moon moved round try to come to him, but sadly, they only can see each other , never can get together again.

Hou yi is the hero, people want to commemorate him and the love between him and his wife, every family will reunite together at middle of august night, woman would cooking the same food that as Hou Yi's wife had cooked for Hou Yi.

Hey , Hey, You two keep the last piece for me !
Rumor two? Let me finish this piece of moon cake

Rumor two is from mu mum.

Mum said, tonight our whole family sit together enjoy the moon, the food, same every family is happy. isn't it?

“yes.” I said with mouth full of moon cake.

“Do you know there are families crying tonight?”
“No, which family? Why?”
“The DA families.”
“ Long time ago, the DA people came convert Han Chinese. They send one DA person at each home. This DA person is the master. The Han families have to give the best food, the best cloth to the DA people. The DA people can kill any Han Chinese when ever he want. After so many year, Few of HAN people start want to fright back. But how? One woman find a way! She put the little cloth with message on it in the cookies, give to other families, then other families do the same. Soon , whole the HAN families know that at the middle of august when the moon right up to the top, every HAN family will kill the DA person in your own home. Yes, they did success. Since then every Middle of august when the moon comes up, the whole HAN Chinese will reunite the family, celebrate. The cookie that smart woman made for pass the message became the famous for every family. But the DA people would gather together crying in the same night.”

Here I have to say, I have done some research, there isn't any DA ethnic people in the history. All I can get is at Yuan dynasty there is war from Zhu yuan zhang (he is the first empire for Ming dynasty, which is the dynasty placed Yuan dynasty. That story is close to Mum's story).

I think the whole the world know that YUAN dynasty initiate by Ghengis khan So now we can guess, that DA people is Mongolian.

How to make moon cake?

I said :" No, cultural soaking food. live first, cultural come out from living."

I love that!

Cultural soaking in food

Cultural soaking in food

First I would talk about dumpling.
Why is Dumpling?
Good question!
Dumpling is the main food for Spring Festive in China. But the traditional Chinese doesn't call this event “Spring Festive” they say it “Guo Nian”.

I guess you going ask “why “again?

Well, if you go to the kitchen make yourself a cup of coffee and bring some biscuits to nibbling. Over there, take that cushion.

Where we were? Oh, GUO NIAN! GUO is a action word, here meant Finally get over it” NIAN is come from a Rumor.
The rumor is long long time ago, as always start like with “long long time ago”. In the endless forest up inside the mountains, there is a giant monster called “NIAN”. “NIAN “ will hunting for food every 365 days, sleep the rest time.
“NIAN “ always come out at the middle night ,so our ancestor called that night “chu xi ye”.Chu means get rid of it. Xi means yesterday. Ye is night. So all those means Get rid of last night.

The rule is everybody must be home with their elders that night. Whatever you near or far away. You have to go back to your oldest male home, stay with them, reunite the family. Now we can see that is kind like the “last Supper”. Because no one know who going be taken by NIAN. So this reunite give chance to everybody see each other, the last minute of his life spent with whole family.
NIAN always come out at midnight, before that, every family is silently sit together with their nerve, because it could be the last supper so the family would cooking the best food. In those days, the best food is pork.
No, no beef or lamb. Chinese character for “home” is a shelter on top, underneath is a pig. Yes , a pig. No , not people. Like this 家. Characters are come out living like other things. Now you can see how important pig is.

Now get back to the best food business. Every family use pork with cabbage to making dumpling. Another question, why is cabbage? Cabbage is the only veges can keep in that snowy winter after harvest. In those days not many family own a buffalo. Or call it no milk cow, that kind cow is golden yellow color, buffalo is black mainly in south China. Cow is ancestor, so the Chinese can ate beef any other time if you can afford , but not this particular night. Lamb never was Chinese style, I mean the HAN Chinese. (93% the population is HAN). Now get back to our result Pork cabbage dumpling.

Do you want to get another cup of coffee? Let's move to my green house. Yes, very comfortable. It is nice laying in here, those shade cloths does a beautiful job. A nap could do me well here.

Alright, alright, I won't fall to sleep. I keep talking. Somehow I feel like my Grandma. You know she always use that quiet tune like record machine, keep going on going on and on......

Don't the Chinese never fight back to the NIAN? That word Pronounce “nee-an”. Yes, somehow they found that NIAN frightened of big noises like thunder and red colours. So our ancestor invent fireworks and charms to stick on the gatepost: red paper with all sorts of wishes written on it. They start burning the firework right at midnight. After midnight everybody get one year older. Aha, now you know why whole the Chinese get one year old in this particular night.. Now, from all that they've been through, they surely have every reason to celebrate. How to celebrate? In those poor times, food is the best! Which kind food is the best? Pork cabbage dumpling!
Of course, as time pass by, people add all sort of pleasure in this event.
Like give present to the kids, visiting friends. Same as food, not just pork cabbage dumpling, all sort kinds food. Dumpling have all sort kinds as well.

Dumpling
